Yale or bust

“Just do something crazy” is the advice of Baltimore, Md., high school graduate Gabe Acheson, who dodged rattlesnakes, spotted a bear cub and befriended strangers as he journeyed through the wilderness this summer on his way to begin his freshman year at Yale University, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Gabe pledged in his application to make the 400-mile trek by foot, and true to his word, he tackled the Appalachian Trail and then some as he traveled north, helped along by Google Maps, of course.

Gabe explained his motives in the article:

“I figured if I put it in an essay, that would force me to follow through on my plan. …I wanted to have a transitional adventure that would represent the major change in my life and have it be more than just driving five hours on I-95. … I really hope that this encourages people to take up their own adventure, to just grab life by the whatever. Just do something crazy.”
