Yale economist praises Kamala policy that mirrors Vance’s

OPINION: Former Biden official now at Yale likes Kamala Harris’ economic plans – including the parts she borrowed from Vance

A Yale University professor really likes her former employer’s plan to raise the child tax credit – a proposal JD Vance supports.

“The vice president has pretty clearly articulated an economic vision that is very much rooted in her life experience,” law school Professor Natasha Sarin told the student newspaper.

Sarin (pictured) is a former deputy assistant secretary in the Biden Treasury Department, as the Yale Daily News noted. She worked on economic policy issues.

“Sarin noted that Harris grew up the child of immigrants, and she said this led to Harris knowing what it’s like to experience the desire for upward economic mobility in a country that so often has tried to block such mobility for people like her,” the student newspaper reported the professor saying about her former boss. (The vice president’s reference to her economic background is a meme).

Vance grew up in poverty – there is both a book and a movie called “Hillbilly Elegy” about it. Vance’s mom was addicted to drugs and he was raised by his grandma. Harris’s mom was an accomplished medical researcher and her dad was a Stanford professor. Both parents have doctorates.

The newspaper paraphrased Sarin as praising Harris’ plan to “ease the financial burden for families in the U.S. by increasing the child tax credit to $3,600 per child, from the current $2,000, and also establish a brand new $6,000 tax credit for newborns.” The student newspaper also noted Harris’ support for help for small businesses and new homeowners.

“To Sarin, these policies present a positive vision for the economy not only because of the short run economic stimulus they provide but also the long term positive effect they have on society overall,” the student newspaper reported. “She emphasized the positive impact she will have on the new entrants to the American economy.”

Raising the child tax credit is a great idea. As a Catholic open to life, I am all for backing positive behavior, such as having kids.

Which is something I like about JD Vance.

“I’d love to see a child tax credit that’s $5,000 per child,” Vance said in August. “But you, of course, have to work with Congress to see how possible and viable that is.” Harris announced her support for an expanded child tax credit after Vance made his comments.

In fact, Vance’s tax credit would reach more people – an analysis by the American Enterprise Institute found his plan would cost more than Harris’ proposal.

The cost, and who should get the benefit, are worthy points of debate. But economic plans should definitely promote childbearing.
