{"id":157848,"date":"2024-12-10T16:50:55","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T21:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/?p=157848"},"modified":"2024-12-10T16:50:55","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T21:50:55","slug":"despite-historic-gains-among-demographic-latino-men-at-emory-disheartened-by-trump-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/despite-historic-gains-among-demographic-latino-men-at-emory-disheartened-by-trump-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Despite historic gains among demographic, Latino men at Emory &#8216;disheartened&#8217; by Trump win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Voting for Trump &#8216;just tells me about where people&#8217;s priorities are, where their intelligence is&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although Donald Trump made historic inroads among minority voters in this year&#8217;s election, Latinos in particular, males in that demographic at Emory University reported being &#8220;disheartened&#8221; at the 45th president&#8217;s victory.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/national-news\/articles\/2024-11-06\/how-5-key-demographic-groups-helped-trump-win-the-2024-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. News<\/a>,<\/em> Trump won 42 percent of the total Latino vote in 2024, and 47 percent of Latino men. In 2020 by contrast, 63 percent of Latinos voted for Joe Biden, but only 35 percent chose Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The Latino men at Emory who shared their thoughts with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emorywheel.com\/article\/2024\/12\/latino-men-at-emory-talk-politics-masculinity-mental-health-following-2024-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Emory Wheel<\/em><\/a> emphasized what Trump&#8217;s second term might mean for &#8220;masculinity&#8221; and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Emory Dance &amp; Movement Studies professor Julio Medina said that while he wasn&#8217;t surprised Trump won last month, the margin of the victory was &#8220;scary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat just tells me about where people&#8217;s priorities are, where their intelligence is,&#8221; Medina<em>\u00a0<\/em>said.<\/p>\n<p>An acolyte of Paulo Freire&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/materials\/pedagogy-of-the-oppressed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pedagogy of the Oppressed<\/a> according to his faculty page, Medina added that &#8220;Latine&#8221; culture is &#8220;deeply embedded in patriarchal systems,&#8221; the origins of which stem from &#8220;colonization.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dance.emory.edu\/images\/1by1-square\/julio-medina.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot\" width=\"228\" height=\"228\" \/>\u201cThey are Western notions of patriarchy and what it means to be male,\u201d Medina <em>(pictured) <\/em>said. \u201cThose ideas have been passed on to us by force, and we\u2019ve maintained them subconsciously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Emory Mellon Mays Fellow Taylor Colorado Merino agreed, saying Republican policies &#8220;resonate&#8221; with more traditional &#8220;Latine&#8221; families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow masculinity is viewed has swayed political ideologies for the Latine community,\u201d Colorado Merino said. \u201cLeftist views are seen as not the norm within traditional masculinity of Latino communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/the-confederacy-won-emory-professor-says-of-trump-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018The Confederacy won,\u2019 Emory professor says of Trump victory<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He added traditional Latino men view themselves as having the &#8220;responsibility to carry the burden, or do things on [their] own,&#8221; so why would they vote for a collectivist (like Harris)?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emorywheel.com\/article\/2024\/12\/latino-men-at-emory-talk-politics-masculinity-mental-health-following-2024-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From the story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHispanic culture has this sentiment of machismo, where the man is the one in charge of the family household, but my father isn&#8217;t necessarily like that,\u201d [student] Anthony Medina said. \u201cWe have a matriarchal family dynamic, and my dad has really instilled the importance of having an open conversation with my mother and making sure that everybody&#8217;s voice is heard in our family unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Medina acknowledged the cultural pressures that come with being a Latino man, especially within a culture that values collective unity. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>While [&#8230;] Medina recognized the value of familial support, he also noted the barriers that many men in his community face when it comes to seeking mental health care, including financial obstacles.
