Yesterday, hundreds of thousands of people gathered peacefully along the National Mall, an age-old symbol of change and protest, to have their voices heard about the society-altering decision known as Roe v. Wade. They took that first step toward change.
Prominent among those marching for life were thousands of college students–groups of them chanting as they sported colorful scarves and hoisted their banners high. Despite a lack of attention from the mainstream media year after year, the energy that went through the crowd can only be described as electrifying.
The students showed truly inspirational desire and passion. Our generation is not always portrayed in the best light, and we do not always get the credit that we deserve for our prouder moments. But as far as the eye could see, students from across the country, even from across the globe even, were demanding more of our government and of our lawmakers. Students were proud to be there, taking charge of chants and prayers, and providing the shock of liveliness needed to keep the crowds energized and strong. These college students were expressing their desire to protect future generations, to give others the same right bestowed upon them.
For this reason, the March for Life is more than just a call to action and change. It is about bringing attention to the fact that the first inalienable right, as laid out in our country’s founding documents, has been denied to countless members of our generation. The right to life is something so simple and fundamental, yet has become so highly politicized. The March for Life is about putting aside politics and joining together to recognize that right.
The chants grew so loud as we climbed to the top of the hill that people came out of their offices to see the streets flooded with people expressing the sole message of the day: We are the pro-life generation.
For many of us who walked the route today, it was not only about gathering to spread the message of life, but also demanding more of ourselves and our generation. We’re called the millennials, coming of age in a new millennium. With all this technology and innovation at our fingertips, more than ever the ability to change the world can be achieved. We must use these societal advances to envision a culture of life.
