With a possible vote on the DREAM Act late this week, student governments around the country are debating endorsing the bill. At Fresno State last night, that debate almost lead to a fight.
The verbal altercation began with heated remarks from one hearing attendee.
“By the way, the truth is this land is stolen land, and we will never leave,” the attendee said. “This was our land first. I don’t care what you say, what you think — Tea Party, you can go to hell.”
In response, another audience member started chants of “USA” and began yelling at the man.
Fresno State has made headlines recently because its student body president, Pedro Ramirez, is an illegal immigrant. He acknowledged his immigration status in November, after an anonymous tip was sent to the Fresno State Collegian.
“There has to be a point in time when people say you know what, in Pedro’s case, I’m here illegally I need to make things right,” said one attendee during the hearing.
While the student government endorsed the DREAM Act, some say Ramirez’s continued role as student president could affect donations to the school.
“Many alumni will just say if he’s going to be allowed to stay in that position, my money will dry up for the university,” an alumni of the school told CBS KGPE last night after the hearing.
