VCU activists target campus leaders to fight ‘oppression, imperialism, white supremacy, cis-hetero patriarchy’

Activists at Virginia Commonwealth University, largely under the pro-Palestinian banner, have pledged to disrupt the fall semester and target Board of Visitors members and other campus leaders to “fight against oppression and hence against our university, our government … imperialism, white supremacy, the cis-hetero patriarchy and all the systems that seek to oppress us.”

That according to a VCU “Disorientation” guide that spells out how student activists hope to take down center-right board members and Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin this school year.

The efforts kicked off late last month with a teach in. Next, on Wednesday, activists organized a class walkout — even though campus leaders last month cracked down on rules surrounding campus protests, “including the banning of tents, requiring advance approval for encampments and requiring mask-wearers to present ID,” the Richmond Times Dispatch reported.

“Student speakers included representatives from Students for Justice in Palestine, a campus group that advocates for Palestinians with protests, boycotts and educational events,” the newspaper reported.

Luiza Dale, an assistant professor in graphic design, canceled class so that her students could take part, according to a screenshot of her announcement posted on X.

“I encourage you to attend if you can, but of course, this is completely up to you,” Dale wrote.

VCU was rocked with controversy last spring after police were forced to deploy tear gas to break up a violent anti-Israel protest on campus. The 2024-25 school year may be another tumultuous time for the public institution.

The guide, a copy of which was obtained by The College Fix, names several center-right board members the activists hope to target in the coming months.

“There are so many ways to stay tapped in and this school year we will continue to fight against oppression and hence against our university, our government, and the systems in place that oppress and perpetuate oppression,” according to the guide.

“Tap in to student organizations, Richmond organizations, local and global action, there are plenty of ways for you to connect and make a difference and fight for a world free of imperialism, white supremacy, the cis-hetero patriarchy, and all systems that seek to oppress us.”
