Michigan State University professor Alexa Veneema sent an email to her class calling Trump supporters ‘utterly naive’
The 76.5 million Americans who voted for President Donald Trump are “utterly naive” according to Michigan State University Professor Alexa Veneema.
The psychology professor sent her class an email after the election where she offered her thoughts on why Trump won.
In addition to winning a majority of Electoral College votes, the 45th and 47th president won a majority of the popular vote, all seven swing states, and a record number of Latinos, including around half of Hispanic men.
“You must be as devastated as I am. And probably feel an overwhelming grief. And maybe you are stuck in the first phase of grief, denial,” the behavioral neuroscientist wrote, according to a screenshot posted by Old Row Official.
“Or maybe you feel the first 4 stages of grief all at once. I’m there with you. Our future will not look anything like it did so far in our lives,” Veneema said.
“It is unbelievable to me that so many Americans are so utterly naive and would fall for this and support misogyny, racism, xenophobia, hate, and violence,” Veneema wrote.
She said students should support one another to “lower” their “anxiety.”
Veneema also said she would understand if students did not want to come to class, and offered to give a shorter lecture. “Anyone attending will get free bonus points for the TopHat in-class questions,” Veneema said.
The Lansing State Journal reported that Veneema has not been disciplined, though the “provost’s office has had conversations with Veenema and the head of the psychology department,” according to its paraphrase of a media comment.
“This is more of a learning opportunity,” spokeswoman Emily Guerrant told the local newspaper. “And how we would’ve preferred the situation was handled.”
However, a leader of the campus Turning Point USA group said Veneema broke university policies and he will be filing a complaint against her.
As previously reported, Veneema’s fellow Michigan State Professor Shlagha Borah also told her students she “cannot, in good conscience, go on about my day like everything is alright.”
She canceled class, as The College Fix reported. A university spokesman said the school would be “addressing” the situation.
Veneema is not alone in using Trump’s victory as a chance to criticize Republicans and complain about racism, sexism, and other issues, as The Fix has documented.
