The parameters of free speech at the University of Georgia will be considered by a federal judge tomorrow in a hearing over the school’s speech zones, which comprise less than 1 percent of the campus.
According to the Alliance Defending Freedom, which is representing Young Americans for Liberty in the lawsuit, the school had a problem with – of all things – a prop about fiscal restraint:
In March 2011, Young Americans for Liberty conducted a debt clock display to draw attention to the mounting national debt. University officials told YAL they needed to cease their expressive activities because it was outside the speech zones.
YAL would like to speak freely, host informational tables and displays, and use hand-held signs on campus outside the designated speech zones but fears punishment from university officials.
For those in the area who’d like to see the hearing in person, it’s at 9:30 a.m. at the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, 115 E. Hancock Ave., Athens.
