A judge ruled that the University of Colorado may prohibit anyone who is not a student or employee of the university from setting foot on campus property. Colorado is attempting to prevent an April 20th gathering of pot smokers on campus. According to Inside Higher Ed:
Judge Andrew Macdonald said that the university had legitimate reasons to block the event. “Why doesn’t CU have the right to say, ‘We don’t want to pay $60,000 a year for this?'” he said. “Why don’t they have the right to say, ‘We’re tired of this?'”
I would respond: because “they” are administrators at a public university, and there are strict limits on what a public university may prohibit on its grounds.
