Home of Jewish university regent also was targeted in similar incident over the summer
The home of University of Michigan President Santa Ono was vandalized with anti-Israel graffiti on Monday, the anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel, according to police.
The vandalism took place several hours before a pro-Palestinian protest on campus, where one student was arrested, according to WXYZ News 7.
Sometime overnight, police said Ono’s West Bloomfield home was covered in spray-painted words, including “intifada,” “coward,” and “divest,” MLive reports. Ono currently lives in another residence on campus, according to the report.
The red paint was found on his house, driveway, and walkway, according to News 7:
Around the same time, the Jewish Federation of Detroit was also vandalized in Bloomfield Township. The FBI confirms they were in West Bloomfield and Bloomfield Township Monday as local police investigate. …
At the [University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus] Monday, many Jewish student groups held a prayer vigil, honoring the hostages and remembering the hundreds of civilians killed in Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel.
Nearby, pro-Palestinian student groups took to the streets protesting over the thousands of deaths from Israel’s bombardment of Gaza and now Lebanon. Campus police kept tight security near the Diag, and one Palestinian protester marching was arrested.
Police say protesters then surrounded the patrol car, which led to a clash with officers who used pepper spray. That person detained was soon released, and an investigation is underway.
Jordan Acker, a University of Michigan regent, described the vandalism as “disgusting” and “criminal” in an interview with News 7.
“To whoever is doing this out there, you are not helping anyone. All you are doing is simply making Jews feel unsafe,” he said.
Acker’s law office was vandalized with similar anti-Israel graffiti in June, The Fix reported at the time. He is Jewish.
“This is not like sending a letter or showing up at a board meeting. This is done to harass elected officials, to harass the president, to harass the Jewish community,” Acker said this week. “It’s disgusting.”
On Monday, pro-Israel students held events on campuses across the country in remembrance of the Israelis who were killed or taken hostage during the Hamas attack.
Meanwhile, others held protests in opposition to Israel and support of a “free Palestine,” The Fix reported.
