Event intended to ‘honor the 150,000 martyrs who have lost their lives at the hands of the zionist entity’
The University of Maryland Students for Justice in Palestine placed 15,000 flags to “honor” the “martyrs” of the war in Gaza.
“Yesterday, we put out 15,000 flags in honor of 150,000+ killed in Gaza by the Israeli genocidal regime,” the group wrote on Instagram. It held the event on Tuesday. The group also apparently raised the Palestinian flag.
It plans to host a similar event on Oct. 7, the one-year anniversary of when Hamas terrorists attacked Israeli citizens, sparking an ongoing war.
“As we come back to campus we need to remember that there is no ‘back to school’ in Gaza,” the group wrote on Instagram
“The Zionist entity has demolished nearly all schools and universities and the future of tens of thousands of students,” the pro-Palestinian group wrote. “We are so privileged to have the opportunity to earn an education and we use actions like these to put that education to fight for justice.”
An earlier post said the event would “honor the 150,000+ martyrs* who have lost their lives at the hands of the zionist entity.”
The event drew criticism from the Jewish community, as reported by The Daily Wire.
“Rabbi Ari Israel, director of the university’s Hillel chapter, told The Daily Wire he expressed concerns about the event to university leadership,” the conservative news outlet reported. He told The Daily Wire another event is planned for Oct. 7.
The Daily Wire reported:
Israel told parents of Jewish university students that “we did voice our concerns with senior UMD leadership” and “apprised them of the emotional load SJP’s callous behavior will bear on our Jewish community if they protest on the greatest Jewish day of mourning and tragedy since the Holocaust.”
The outlet said the estimate of 150,000 dead seems high.
“Not even Hamas claims 150,000 people have been killed since Oct. 7 — the terrorist group alleges that 40,000 Palestinians have been killed— but SJP says it uses a higher ‘estimate’ because ‘the health ministry has been unable to keep count of the dead,’” according to The Daily Wire.
