With no Internet access and a curfew approaching, Tulane junior Greg Weissman left his dormitory in Zamalek, Cairo, hoping to find an open café nearby. Accompanied by his friend Suzuki, an exchange student from Japan, Weissman walked along the Nile River until he found a small restaurant with tables outside.
Just after their drinks arrived, the two heard chants roaring nearby as a crowd of protesters marched down the adjacent street. Eager to witness the events firsthand, Weissman and Suzuki jogged toward the mob and joined the demonstration.
“For the most part, people were happy we were there,” Weissman said. “People were patting us on our backs, and many thanked us for helping their cause. We definitely got some bad looks too. People knew this wasn’t our fight and we were there just as spectators. They were willing to die for the cause, and Suzuki and I were not.”
