Power was briefly cut to a “Truth About Transgenderism” event at the University of the Pacific, which also drew roughly 100 protesters that included tense confrontations with police.
The protest targeted a Turning Point USA event titled “The Truth About Transgenderism” featuring Pastor Junsun Yoo. Prior to the event, posters on campus declared “He created them male and female and blessed them,” quoting the book of Genesis in the Bible.
A safe space of sorts, an alternative event titled “There’s More to Us,” was put together by the university’s Center for Identity and Inclusion to coincide with the March 19 event hosted by the conservative student group, CBS reported.
“A designated area to protest was set up with fencing outside of the theater, however, some protestors opted to stand on the grass outside of the gate barricades. In their attempts to move the 120 protestors, campus police responded by pushing back on protestors and attempting to remove a large sign being held by protestors,” the news outlet reported.
“CBS13 witnessed multiple exchanges during the question and answer portion of the event where speakers were not in support of the event messaging. At one point, power went out inside the venue cutting audio and some of the lights. The Q&A portion of the event continued, without microphones, until power was restored a few minutes later.”
The cause of the power outage is unknown and under investigation, a spokesperson told CBS.
In a statement to local news outlets, the university also disavowed the event: “This event is not a university sanctioned event. This is a registered student organization event. As with all registered student organizations who invite speakers or host events, the university provides event space and audio/visual capabilities. No other university funds are allocated.”
