Trump ‘danger to everyone’ UW-Madison LGBT scholars say

‘But I think it’s profoundly concerning and dangerous for trans people — especially young trans people’

President Donald Trump is a “danger to everyone” but especially “trans people” and even more so, “young trans people,” according to a University of Wisconsin Madison professor.

Trump’s election is a danger, “full stop,” according to Tyrell Haberkorn.

Haberkorn, who uses “she/her/hers” pronouns, made the comments recently to The Badger Herald, a student newspaper. In addition to teaching southeastern Asian studies, Haberkorn also leads the LGBTQ+ Committee.

The University of Wisconsin’s embrace of institutional neutrality makes the situation worse, according to Haberkorn.

“We [campus community] have to be explicitly supportive and explicitly loud, to say over and over again to trans students that they are welcome here and we will do what we can to keep you safe,” the professor (pictured) told the student newspaper.

The LGBTQ+ studies certificate program director shared similar concerns.

Enke, according to the newspaper’s paraphrase, “said the Trump campaign’s rhetoric and actions surrounding trans people make hateful rhetoric and questioning whether trans and non-binary people should exist seem acceptable — when it is unacceptable and misinformed.”

“This last election cycle put a continuous stream of misinformed, hateful anti-trans discourse into the airwaves, spreading fear and hatred and inaccuracy,” Enke also said. “We are seeing many of the things that make our lives possible being taken away.”

Enke’s focus is on the “history of sexuality and gender, primarily 20th century United States, focusing on transgender, queer and feminist social movements; my work is also animated by queer crip studies, critical race and indigeneity studies, graphic art and comics studies,” according to the scholar’s bio.

The comics studies expert agree young transgender people are “especially” under attack but that also “everybody” is under threat.

“[Anti-trans rhetoric] doesn’t only affect people who are currently identifying as trans or non-binary,” Enke said. “It affects everybody and makes everybody feel very cautious about expressing any kind of question or complexity around gender expression or gender identity.”

Enke previously tried to get Daily Wire speaker Matt Walsh canceled, according to a bias complaint obtained by The College Fix in 2022.

“The speaker is known not only to target gender and sexual minorities as well as women; the YAF is known to intentionally inflame and draw a response from marginalized and feminist communities,” Enke wrote. “Trans* and nonbinary and queer people, trans* children.”
