Tragic Alcohol-Related Death at UNC

A heartbreaking story out of the University of North Carolina–one freshman student died in a bizarre alcohol-related accident:

An autopsy report released Monday for David Shannon shows the UNC freshman died from blunt trauma to the head, neck and torso and had a blood alcohol concentration of .22 at the time of his death.

Shannon, a pledge in the Chi Phi fraternity, sustained the injuries after falling 30 feet from a piece of machinery at the Ready Mixed Concrete Plant in Carrboro in the early hours of Oct. 27, the report states…

Someone Shannon’s size would have to consume 11 drinks within one hour to reach a blood alcohol level of .22.

The investigation is reportedly ongoing nearly a year after the death took place. Authorities released their report just this week, and are still trying to determine what Shannon was doing at a concrete plant in the middle of the night. They have not ruled out hazing as a possibility.
