Too far? Teen facing possible assault and battery charge for tossing carrot at teacher

Fourteen year-old Aliya May, a student at Moody Middle School, is facing possible assault and battery charges after she launched a baby carrot at a teacher while in the hallway.

“I don’t even know how to combat the stupidity,” Karrie May, the teen’s mother, says.

“… I can see a couple of days in school detention or even a couple days out-of-school suspension. But this goes way beyond that.”

WTVR-6 reports:

Aliya said she left class and saw a teacher she had last year in the hallway. So, as a joke, she said she reached for a baby carrot she had stashed at lunch and tossed it towards the teacher, never thinking she’d hit her in the forehead.

Karrie May said the school’s Disciplinary Review Board sent a letter recently to try to get her daughter to admit guilt. She said they respectfully declined. Now mom said they await a summons to see what happens next.

“This could go before a judge and there could be sufficient evidence to find her guilty, but I don’t think it’s something a judge would want to find her guilty of,” [CBS 6 legal expert Todd] Stone said. “They may offer her counseling, sort of a carrot at the end of a stick.”

Whoa, good one there, counselor!

Mrs. May said that “the school’s Disciplinary Review Board sent a letter recently to try to get her daughter to admit guilt” but the family “respectfully declined.”

It doesn’t indicate if the admission was regarding the mere chucking of the carrot, or for the official charge of assault.

The district refused to comment on the matter.

If there is a history between the “carroted” teacher and Aliya (or, if Aliya has a lengthy discipline record in general), this may account for the seemingly harsh charge. If not, then this appears to be yet another school disciplinary matter blown out of proportion.
