To those who gave all – thank you

I once heard a U.S. Marine put Memorial Day like this: “They gave their tomorrows so we can have ours. Let’s take time out of our day to remember those we’ve lost, thank them for our freedoms.”

This particular Marine, Cpl. Juan Dominguez, had lost three of four limbs serving in Afghanistan, but emphasized the annual observance isn’t about the legs and arm he lost – it’s about his buddies who didn’t come home at all. His battalion lost 25 alone.

Words such as honor, courage, sacrifice and heroes will be touted today by speakers at Memorial Day ceremonies across this nation. They’re meant to remember and pay respect to those who have fought and died to defend America in all its wars to date.

It’s easy to forget they’re the reason why we breathe free air, the reason we don’t answer to a king, the reason we no longer allow slavery in this country. Men and women have fought and died to defend this country – this exceptional country founded on unique, God-endowed rights and ideals.

To those who gave all – thank you. May we not squander your sacrifice.
