Throwing paint, breaking glass: Pro-Palestinian students cause chaos at McGill University

On the second day of a three-day student strike, pro-Palestinian activists at Canada’s McGill University vandalized an engineering building by breaking glass and throwing paint all over the place.

The protesters “specifically targeted the dean’s office” and also “faced off” against pro-Israel counter-protesters, according to The Montreal Gazette.

After their desecration of the McConnell Engineering Building, demonstrators gathered at the James Administration Building, which “remains boarded up following previous protests.”

Although the student strike reportedly “was not organized” by its leadership, the Students’ Society of McGill University overwhelmingly approved it — 72 percent voting in favor. That figure, however, represents just 17 percent of the McGill student population.

The protest was advertised by the group Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights, which had reportedly “lost its club status” after posting images of “armed figures” on social media.

Another group that had lost its club status, Students for Palestine’s Honour and Resistance, shared on its Instagram a form titled “Report Your Non-Compliant Prof,” which asked for “class times, room numbers, and screenshots of professors’ messages regarding those teachers who continued to teach during the student strike,” the National Post reports:

Angela Campbell, McGill’s associate provost, condemned the form, calling it “totally unethical, unacceptable and damaging to our community,” in an email to students, and describing it as an “intimidation tactic” in violation of McGill’s student code of conduct.

“The form is there as a channel by which students can inform picket organizers of their non-compliant profs,” a representative of SPHR McGill told the Gazette.

Also on Wednesday, protesters and non-student supporters waved Palestinian flags at McGill’s Roddick Gates. At the student union, copies of the student-run newspaper The Tribune carried a front-page headline that read: “Students, you must strike for Palestine. No justice, no class.”

The paper also ran an editorial, which argued, “All undergraduate students should see it as a moral responsibility to strike.”

According to The Jerusalem Post, Bnai Brith Canada said in a statement: “Protest is a protected right — intimidation is not. No student should have to choose between their safety and their education … McGill is failing its students. The University has a responsibility to ensure the well-being and academic success of every student — this must end now.”
