The federal College Affordability and Transparency Center recently released its latest annual list of the nation’s most expensive schools, and here’s the Top Ten (keep in mind this is compared to the national average of $23,698 for private, four-year institutions, and compared to the average of $7,404 for public, four-year ones):
1. Landmark College (V.T.) $49,739*
2. Columbia University (N.Y.) $47,246
3. Sarah Lawrence College (N.Y.) $46,924
4. Vassar College (N.Y.) $46,270
5. Wesleyan University (Conn.) $45,928
6. George Washington University (D.C.) $45,780
Numbers seven through 10 – Carnegie Mellon University, Trinity College (Conn.), University of Chicago and Bucknell University (Pa.) – all come in at about $45,000 as well.
“Each year the federal government releases the names of the tuition hogs in the hopes of encouraging colleges and universities to moderate their price hikes,” CBS News reports. “While well intentioned, this goal doesn’t appear to be working. You’ll see many of the same public and private schools on these federal lists every year.”
*Landmark College is exclusively for students with various learning disabilities.
As for state colleges, Pennsylvania is by far the most expensive to attend public college in – two of its state colleges came in at No. 1 and 2, respectively, with annual tuitions of about $16,500. Several other of its colleges were also among the top twenty.
