Teachers union head: ‘Conservatives don’t even want black children to be able to read’

Mayor wants $50 billion for abortions, weight loss drugs, and immigrants

Conservatives oppose black children even learning how to read, according to the president of the Chicago Teachers Union.

Stacy Gates, who sends her son to a private school, was responding to criticism of her union’s latest contract demands. It includes demands for illegal immigrants, abortions, and weight loss drugs. It will cost more than $50 billion.

“Conservatives don’t even want black children to be able to read,” she said Sunday on WBBM, a local radio station.

She said further:

Remember, these same conservatives are the conservatives who probably would have been championing Black codes, you know, during reconstruction or thereafter. So, forgive me again if conservatives pushing back on educating immigrant children, Black children, children who live in poverty, doesn’t make my anxiety go up. That’s what they’re supposed to say. That is literally a part of the oath that they take to be right wing.

It was not immediately clear what the “oath” was or when conservatives take it. The latest data show only 31 percent of Chicago Public Schools students are “proficient at reading,” according to Chalkbeat.

As Fox News reported:

The teachers’ union is in the process of negotiating a new teacher’s contract with the public school system, which calls for an extra $50 billion in funding. The massive increase is being proposed to cover wage hikes as well as other demands. For instance, the money would be used to provide fully paid abortions for its members, new migrant services and facilities and a host of LGBTQ-related requirements and training in schools.

The proposal, to cover the 2025-28 school year, has faced criticism from the conservative Illinois Policy Institute. However, Republicans have minimal power in Chicago itself to stop the contract proposal.

The Chicago Board of Education is appointed by the mayor. The current Mayor Brandon Johnson is a former CTU organizer and won with the support of the union.

Illinois is also dominated by Democrats, as is the Chicago City Council.
