With midterm elections swiftly approaching, the Tea Party has captured the nation’s attention. Even on NYU’s liberal campus where the group has been dismissed, it has been embraced by some students.
NYU College Republicans treasurer Jason Angelico thought of the Tea Party as “friends of the Republican Party.”
“Others might say the movement has no solutions,” he said. “They are not anti-government; they are anti-encroaching government. They want to reduce it on all levels and that is in itself a solution.”
Angelico believed many politicians are afraid of the Tea Party.
“It’s a powerful grassroots organization that causes an internal clash among Republicans,” NYU College Democrats secretary Josh Schneier said.
Schneier felt that the movement was “rebranding previous Republican messages.”
“Their principles on government are untenable,” he said. “They are distorting rational political discussion.”
Schneier cast doubts over the prospect of Carl Paladino winning the midterm election. He said the Republican nominee for governor of New York was “full of empty rhetoric.”
Paladino, a millionaire from Buffalo, stunned the Grand Old Party with his win over Rick Lazio as a Tea Party candidate in the primaries.
However, his recent public gaffes have hurt his reputation.
