Swarthmore student paper promises to defend campus community from Trump ‘threats’

The editors of the Swarthmore University student paper want those in the campus community to know they will be there to “diligently” inform you about “threats” coming from the second Trump administration.

The Phoenix claims the campus mood on Wednesday was “dark,” where students “exchanged long, comforting embraces and — sometimes through tears — expressed their worries” about Donald Trump’s coming term.

“The 47th administration looms over us all,” the editors say, “with signs indicating it will be even more extreme than the 45th.”

After all, Trump won by a “narrow majority,” one which decided to give a “convicted felon and sexual abuser who has spewed racist and misogynistic language for years on end” another chance.

While the lines between actual journalism and advocacy have been blurred for some time in American media, here The Phoenix openly admits it is worried about the impact Trump could have on “progressive” endeavors at Swarthmore and the surrounding area.

These include the possible elimination of the federal Department of Education, “mass deportations,” more pro-life judges in the court system, and the “weakening” of things like the Inflation Reduction Act.

More worrisome for The Phoenix is Trump’s alleged promise “to retaliate against and handicap journalism.”

“For the media to continue to serve its purpose, student journalism and free speech must be protected,” the editors write. “It ultimately is the responsibility of our college’s administration to protect The Phoenix and student speech in the face of increasing national threat.

“[W]e hope the administration has already and will continue to put the necessary work in to figure out what this incoming administration means for Swarthmore and its students, staff, and faculty, and how to counteract the threats Trump poses …”

Keep in mind this is the same student publication that advocated for a critical race theory graduation requirement, ran an op-ed which pondered if white people should be kicked out of campus parties, and apologized for running a op-ed critical of progressives and “privilege.”
