A recent survey shows a large majority of Americans favor the Trump administration’s measures to combat antisemitism on U.S. campuses.
According to the poll conducted by Schoen Cooperman Research and Israel on Campus Coalition, two-thirds of those surveyed “strongly” or “somewhat” support cutting federal funding to universities that “do not do enough to protect Jewish students or address antisemitism.”
Two-thirds also “strongly” or “somewhat” support rescinding visas and deporting non-U.S. citizens “who participate in protests supporting Hamas,” a terrorist organization according to the U.S. government.
Seventy-five percent of participants also say they are “very” or “somewhat” concerned that anti-Israel/pro-Hamas campus protests lead to anti-Jewish hate crimes and violence.
Other poll findings include:
— Based on “what they know,” 54 percent support the deportation of Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia graduate student who helped lead various pro-Hamas protests. A plurality (40 percent) of college students also favor his deportation.
— 85 percent believe Israel has the right to defend itself.
— 86 percent agree “Palestinians in Gaza have suffered because Hamas started a war by attacking Israel on October 7th [2023] and kidnapping civilian hostages.”
— 81 percent concur that the Israel-Hamas war would have ended long had Hamas returned the Israeli hostages and relinquished power.
— One-third of respondents say Israel is engaged in a “genocide” via its resumption of military action against Hamas.
— 17 percent say Hamas “should be allowed to continue ruling Gaza.”
Jacob Baime, CEO of the Israel on Campus Coalition, said in a statement “The American public has sent a clear message: universities must be held accountable for failing to protect Jewish students from discrimination and harassment.
“Amid a rising crisis of antisemitism, too many academic institutions have neglected their duty. With 66% of U.S. adults and 56% of college students supporting the withdrawal of federal funding from schools that tolerate such failures, these findings signal that administrators must act decisively to ensure a safe, inclusive environment for Jewish students.”
