‘Sometimes, all it takes is a simple voice of love and reason’
It’s not often that college students get to do extraordinary things like saving a child’s life.
But one simple phone call resulted in Carrena Falls (pictured), president of the pro-life Eagles for Life club at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in Minnesota, doing exactly that, according to her story shared on X by Students for Life of America. The organization works with approximately 1,400 pro-life clubs on college campuses across the U.S.
“I am so humbled to have been used by God to help save this little baby and support his sweet mama,” Falls wrote on her Instagram page last week.
The situation began last spring with a call from a friend, Sarah, who knew Falls was active in the pro-life movement.
Falls said Sarah told her about a young pregnant woman named Gabi who was struggling and seriously considering aborting her unborn baby.
Gabi did not want an abortion and her parents had been encouraging her to choose life since the beginning, “but she was being heavily pressured” to have an abortion by others in her life, Falls said. “She used to tell herself that she was ‘definitely going to abort’ but was filled with agony and regret when she looked at photos of fetal development. She would hold her belly and apologize profusely to her little baby.”
When Sarah asked for help figuring out what to say to Gabi, Falls said she felt humbled – and nervous. The purpose of her pro-life club is to help save unborn children’s lives, but Falls said she felt anything but calm when confronted with a real “life-and-death situation.”
Falls gave Sarah information about a local pregnancy resource center, and then told her to remind Gabi that “she’s not going to be a mother; she already is one,’” according to Students for Life.
At the moment, the pro-life student leader did not realize just how effective that message would be.
Later, Falls said she learned that Gabi decided to keep her baby because of those very words.
“It was surreal. My simple words of encouragement had helped this young mother save her little one from abortion,” she said.
In November, Gabi gave birth to a baby boy named Luke, according to Students for Life. Falls said Luke was “welcomed into this world with much love.”

Recently, Falls said Gabi gave her permission to share her and her son’s story because she wants other struggling mothers to know that there is hope.
Falls said she thought the story should be shared, too, to remind student leaders that a simple word or action can make a huge difference in one person’s life – or two.
“Sometimes, all it takes is a simple voice of love and reason,” she said. “To help save a life, we merely need to be a light in the darkness.”
