Coastal Carolina University confirmed that the victim in the shooting, Anthony Liddell, a Sophomore student from Bennettsville, was pronounced dead at the hospital last night after a shooting in the University Place housing complex.
Campus police received the initial 911 call at 7:22 P.M. Tuesday evening with the report of gun shots fired in the University Place apartment complex on 544 across from campus.
Coastal campus police along with Conway police responded immediately to the scene in the back of University Place, near the Grand Strand E building (formerly building 114), to find the victim who reportedly suffered three gun shot wounds.
A resident in University Place, was doing homework at the time of the shooting when she heard three gun shots from outside her window.
The witness said she saw a man talking to another man in a maroon car parked outside her building. The man in the car then shot the man standing next to it three times before fleeing the scene through the main entrance of University Place.
The victim reportedly staggered for a few steps before falling to the ground in the parking lot where he was found by witnesses and later by emergency personnel.
Early accounts of the shooting on social media and elsewhere reported it as a ‘drive-by’ shooting, but the witness said the car was parked when shots were fired.
“The guy was in a car, but it was parked,” she said.
Witnesses said rumors on social media about a woman running from the scene are untrue as well.
The victim was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, which houses the capabilities to treat severe trauma; he was pronounced dead about two hours later.
Police believe there is one suspect in the shooting; he is still at large.
Residence halls will remain on lockdown for the remainder of the night while the State Law Enforcement Division (S.L.E.D.) conducts an investigation and university officials are asking students to stay inside.
The university provided safe transportation home for students who were in class at the time of the shooting through a taxi service.
“We are very prepared for instances of emergency,” said CCU spokesperson, Martha Hunn. “We have plans in place for those instances.”
Hunn added that, “Any time you have an incident like this it saddens us and it is very concerning. Our job is do our best to communicate what is going on so everyone can stay safe.”
Classes will resume normally on Wednesday after CCU Department of Public Safety Police Chief David Roper said there is no apparent threat to students, faculty, or staff.
Counciling Services will be on hand Wednesday starting at 8 A.M. in Coastal Carolina’s Lackey Chapel, the Grand Strand Activity House in University Place, and in the residence halls, to provide assistance to students.
