Student groups petition against new Washington D.C. noise ordinance

A new law passed by the District of Columbia city council made it illegal for a person to make an “unreasonably loud noise between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. that is likely to annoy or disturb one or more other persons in their residences.”

The penalty for violation of this law? 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.

But a group of students have already started a petition against the ordinance, aiming to sway public support toward “an immediate injunction.”

“Who can we expect it to be primarily enforced against? Students,” reads the Facebook group created by DC Students Speak, a student organization that works to break the many “bubbles” that separate DC students by focusing on common goals.

“This law is bad, bad public policy that students throughout the city need to stand up against.”

As of 3pm Thursday, the Facebook group in opposition to the noise ordinance has over 900 members, with over 4,500 awaiting reply.
