The University of Oregon’s athletes have been criticized for getting such lavish perks that they feel emboldened to rape their fellow students.
Less attention gets paid to questionable appropriations by the student government, however.
The Daily Emerald reports:
Senate unanimously approved the Students of the Indian Subcontinent’s $15,000 request to bring Hasan Minhaj, Senior Correspondent from the The [sic] Daily Show, to the group’s cultural night. This is the largest approved request of the year.
It was also a divisive one. As the Daily reported the previous week, the Indian student group hadn’t even started its own fundraising for the event, leading senators to table the request:
Senator Cavan Davies, among others, wants to see the student group fundraise before making a decision on the largest request of this year.
“[The Senate] has voted down other special funding requests solely because there was no effort shown in fundraising. If we want to be viewpoint neutral, we need to at least table this until fundraising can be shown,” Davies said.
Senator Robin Lilley said that approving the request may set a precedent that other groups do not need to fundraise and that surplus funds are not reserved as a last resort.
To add insult to injury, the Indian student group plans to bring Minhaj to campus when the major performance facility on campus will be under renovation – another complaint by senators.
After the rebuke by senators last week, the group finally got off its collective derriere and secured commitments from a handful of departments for funding, the Daily said.
