If you thought student body elections were dirty affairs based on the recent court-ordered invalidation of the vote at Texas A&M University, get a load of what’s happening at George Washington University.
The Joint Elections Committee postponed elections by a week so it could investigate explosive allegations by a male candidate that supporters of a female candidate threatened to ruin his reputation in the worst way possible, The GW Hatchet reports.
Cole Etingoff claimed the student government’s chief of staff had insinuated to him “there would be an effort” to stop his entry into the race against Lande Watson.
His complaint also alleged that President Erika Feinman, who identifies as gender non-binary, was aware Watson’s campaign was running a “smear campaign” against him.
Etingoff’s girlfriend, the president of the Residence Hall Association, filed another complaint that said “she heard that a member of Feinman’s sorority was trying to ‘spread the word’ that ‘Cole supports rape and underage drinking.'”
When Etingoff met with Watson campaign staff and a friend of the female candidate, Amber Singh, he said they accused his girlfriend of creating a “fake, derogatory” Twitter account for Watson. Etingoff claims that was a false-flag operation by the Watson campaign:
Ettingoff alleged in the complaint that when he tried to leave the meeting, Singh “immediately started yelling” that she would make public unfounded accusations of racism, sexism, assault and homophobia about Ettingoff if he entered the presidential race.
Watson campaign staff and supporters told the Hatchet the claims by Etingoff and his girlfriend “were either distorted or false.”
Singh cited her position as “vice president of two advocacy student organizations and a survivor of sexual violence myself” as evidence that she “would never, and have never, engaged in harassing behavior,” and that Etingoff had “falsely” accused her of harassment.
The Joint Elections Committee held a hearing Friday about the election violation complaints, but the Hatchet has not filed an update as of mid-evening.
