Grisly details have emerged of the slaying of California priest, Rev. Eric Freed, who also taught religious courses at Humboldt State University, a local college.
Officials say Freed was beaten to death with a wooden stake and metal pipe in his rectory in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Police have a suspect in custody. According to the Associated Press, Gary Lee Bullock wrapped the body in blankets and doused Freed’s body with liquor before attempting to set the body and the building on fire.
Bullock then allegedly opened the gas valve on a stove and left behind a burning cigar, in an attempt to burn down the building, the AP reports.
Security surveillance video captured images of Bullock on the night of the murder, breaking and crawling through a window.
Video shows Bullock carrying with him the wooden stake and metal pipe police believe he then used to torture and kill Rev. Freed.
