Santorum Speaks at Belmont University

Belmont University, the site of a debate between John McCain and Barack Obama four years ago, hosted GOP hopeful Rick Santorum on Wednesday. Santorum’s visit to the Nashville, TN campus comes a week ahead of the state’s primary vote on Super Tuesday.

In an hour-long speech that didn’t start until about 8:45 p.m. — 45 minutes after it was scheduled to begin — the former Pennsylvania senator railed against big government and said Obama’s re-election bid this fall would “foundationally change” the nation.

While generally steering clear of the social issues he’s made his name on, Santorum attacked Obama and his Republican rivals for their approaches to health insurance, and he sharply criticized the president for his energy and spending policies.

But he also cast his critique in terms of what the Founding Fathers of the United States intended and how he believes Obama has gone off course.

“If Barack Obama is elected, those who believe we should be ruled will win,” Santorum told a crowd of about 800 people, many of them students, at Belmont’s Curb Event Center. “You will see all kinds of efforts for government to manage things.”
