Republican economics professor Dave Brat wins Congressional seat

Republican economics professor Dave Brat trounced his challenger, fellow professor and Democrat Jack Trammell, in the race for a Virginia congressional seat. Dr. Brat won the seat by a margin of more than 26,000 votes, CBS reports.

As The Blaze points out, “despite both teaching at Randolph-Macon College, the two presented a different vision for America’s future while courting voters.”

Brat harnessed tea-party support to a primary upset victory against ex-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor last summer, and has played up his role as an economics professor during campaigning, saying he wants to help spur the U.S. economy, The Blaze added.

In an Oct. 25 interview, Brat said his first priority is job creation, Fredericksburg.com reports.

“The unemployment rate is not capturing the full reality of what our jobless situation is,” Brat said. “The workforce participation rate is the lowest it’s been since World War II. If you ask people in the 7th how the economy is doing, they’ll say it’s terrible.”

“Repealing Obamacare would, I think, go a long way toward job creation,” he had added, “and healing the financial markets, we have to deal with our debt situation.”

Brat has been described as a smart and sexy – yet scatterbrained – educator by students who have taken his classes at Randolph-Macon College.
