Rep. Chip Roy slams UT for funding Planned Parenthood, demands answers

Roy says partnership violates conscience of Texans, questions alignment with state law

Republican Congressman Chip Roy demanded answers from the University of Texas on Wednesday for giving money to Planned Parenthood.

“After receiving $526,145 of the $2 million allotted by [the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services], the university has sub-awarded a total of $49,458 to the Planned Parenthood of Illinois since September 15, 2023,” the Texas representative stated in a letter to the school, according to a news release.

“Planned Parenthood of Illinois is a radical entity and the University of Texas’ association with it violates the conscience of millions of Texans,” Roy stated, adding that the abortion provider “proudly boasts” of offering “free abortions and ‘gender-affirming hormone therapy.’”

He also stated that Americans have a right to know the reasons behind federal grant recipients forming partnerships with organizations that provide abortion and “gender-affirming care,” as well as the conditions under which these partnerships are established.

The congressman asked the university to provide confirmation and documentation of any sub-award grant funding provided to Planned Parenthood of Illinois and details of any funding agreements with Planned Parenthood or other abortion providers since January 2021.

Roy also demanded answers about whether such funding aligns with Texas law, including Senate Bill 14, which prohibits public funds from supporting gender-affirming procedures for minors.

He requested that the university respond to the letter and provide the information by Jan. 22.

This isn’t the first time a university has funded or worked with Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the U.S.

Last year, the University of California at San Diego and Planned Parenthood operated an “exchange” partnership involving aborted fetal body parts and scientific research, The College Fix previously reported.

The abortion provider supplied tissue from aborted fetuses to UC San Diego researchers in return for rights to the university’s patents and intellectual property resulting from the research.

Also last year, a few Massachusetts universities partnered with Planned Parenthood to create “abortion readiness” plans, which were required as part of a new state law. The law specifically names Planned Parenthood as a partner in implementing the requirements.

What’s more, a recent study by the Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement found a growing number of Planned Parenthood locations near colleges and universities, as well as an increase in their proximity to these institutions.
