Campus Reform is reporting the latest attack on free markets from one of our nation’s leading universities. This report comes from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where sociology professor Mustafa Emirbayer is teaching a course entitled “American Racial and Ethnic Minorities.”
The only required reading for the course is a textbook written by Emirbayer himself called Racial Domination, Racial Progress. Here’s a quote from the book, in which Emirbayer envisions his ideal America:
“[T]he skimpy American welfare state – in large part responsible for the millions of citizens living hand-to-mouth today – would expand by generous proportions… [T]he Welfare state would rise up to exert control over the free market, making sure to protect vulnerable citizens from its erratic whims.
Wow. Emirbayer seems very concerned about economic justice–so concerned that he required every student in his class to purchase Racial Domination, Racial Progress, which is sells for $68.31 on Amazon.
Is selling his own overpriced book to his students Emirbayer’s way of demonstrating to his students the “erratic whims” of the free market?
