Pro-Palestinian Cornell group tells Israeli student ‘quit complaining’ about rocket attacks

A Cornell University pro-Palestinian organization told an Israeli student via a Facebook post to “quit complaining” about having to deal with rocket attacks from the Palestinian-controlled Gaza Strip.

In an April 7 Cornell Daily Sun op-ed, Shir Kidron recounted a 2009 Gaza missile attack which struck her home: “A mere two seconds after I entered the shelter, I heard a loud boom, and felt my home collapse. After leaving the shelter, I saw the rocket had hit my bedroom and killed my dog Rosie. I was only 12 years old.”

Forty percent of the children in the Israeli border town of Sderot suffer from PTSD due to the constant threat of rockets, Kidron points out in her piece.

After the group Reject Radicals at Cornell linked to the op-ed on Facebook, the Cornell Collective for Justice in Palestine responded in the comments that if Kidron “want[s] the rockets to stop, [then] end the occupation. Otherwise quit complaining about how it ruined your brunch plans …”

Upset that the RRC highlighted their comment in a subsequent post (and apparently unfamiliar with how Facebook functions), the CCJP told the RRC that if it tagged them in another post, it would be reported for “harassment.”

CCJP was one of the groups that signed onto Cornell Students for Justice in Palestine’s February 20 letter to Cornell President Martha Pollack calling on the university to divest from companies that conduct business with Israel, accusing Israel of engaging in “apartheid” and “ethnic cleansing.”

Rena Nasar, StandWithUs’ Tri-State campus director and managing director of campus affairs, said in a statement to the Journal, “It is inhumane to minimize the rockets Hamas shoots into Israeli civilian homes and nursery schools. There is no justification for such barbaric terrorism and Israel has a right to defend its citizens.”

“It is shameful that CCJP would skirt the issue of the need for negotiations, and blame only Israel for the lack of peace,” Nasar said. “This is yet another example of how boycott campaigns on campus descend into outright hate speech. We urge university leaders to take a clear moral stand by condemning this rhetoric.”
