Official will join 13 other diversity reps at Gainesville campus

The University of Florida recently hired a new diversity official to oversee its campus diversity initiatives, a position that will cost the public university $280,000 per year.

Antonio Farias will assume the position of chief diversity officer at the school this July, according to a recent press release from the university.

Farias, “currently vice president for equity and inclusion/Title IX officer at Wesleyan University,” according to the school, “will hold a cabinet-level spot while overseeing universitywide efforts to advance equity, diversity and inclusion, and establish a new standard of inclusive excellence.”

Farias will also act as an adviser to the president of the university, Kent Fuchs.

Farias, who holds degrees in comparative literature, comparative ethnic studies and fine arts, will join a university that already employees thirteen diversity employees, including five staffers of Multicultural and Diversity Affairs, two in Black Affairs, and two in Lesbian, Ga, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Affairs.

At Wesleyan University, Farias has worked on “issues of inclusion and equity as they relate to race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, veteran status, political affiliation, and national origin.”
