Campaign distributes educational material on Islam
A scholarship being offered on an activism website gives students the chance to win a $3,000 scholarship if they write “Happy Ramadan” cards to Islamic mosques in the United States.
The campaign, titled “Grab the Mic” and hosted on the website DoSomething.org, states that “in the first half of 2017, anti-Muslim hate crimes spiked an alarming 91% compared to same period from the previous year,” and that “as neighbors, we can’t stand for this kind of hate.”
“Make a Happy Ramadan card to show support for our Muslim American neighbors. We’ll mail yours — and thousands of others — to mosques that have been targeted by hate crimes,” the campaign declares.
According to the campaign material, participants who upload a photograph of themselves will be entered in a chance to win a $3,000 scholarship.
“For every card you make, you’ll earn another entry to win: so 1 card = 1 entry, 100 cards = 100 entries, and so on!” the campaign states.
The campaign also offers a guide titled “6 Things You Didn’t Know About Islam.”
“If it weren’t for Islam, we wouldn’t drink coffee,” the guide states. “That’s right, coffee is the invention of the Islamic world. Same with algebra, marching bands, toothbrushes, and medical facilities.”
Underneath the FAQs section of the campaign, the campaign poses the question: “How do I know that what I’m writing isn’t offensive?”
“We’ve made a guide on the Action tab that walks you through everything you need to know to put together a good Happy Ramadan card,” the campaign assures participants.
