UC Santa Cruz hosts ‘Restorative Circles’ to help students process Trump victory

Leaders at the University of California Santa Cruz have hosted three “Restorative Circles” on campus to help students process and come to grips with the recent election of Republican Donald Trump to the White House.

“Restorative Circles” are loosly defined as a community process for supporting those in conflict. Students basically sit in a circle and talk about their feelings.

The circles were among a long list of support events offered at the public university, situated in a region in Northern California known for its social-progressive hippie vibe.

In addition to the circles, the institution hosted a “community gathering,” as well as an “opening gathering space,” an “interactive art project,” and a Multicultural Education Committee safe space, according to the university’s website. There was also a “Solidarity Tongue event” and meditation sessions.

What’s more, drop-in hours to hash out the election results were offered with the Dean of Students, counseling services, Ethnic Resource Center, and Diversity and Inclusion Office, as well as at several other campus locales, such as at the Namaste Lounge, Stevenson Fireside Lounge and Cowell Fireside Lounge.

Underscoring all that, a total of 13 different campus messages processing the election were released in the wake of the results. In addition to a “Moving Forward” message from Chancellor George Blumenthal, statements were put out by:

the Educational Opportunity Programs Office on supporting undocumented students
the UC Santa Cruz Resource Centers
the Interim Vice Provost for Student Success
the Crown College provost
Merrill College leadership
Oakes College
the Porter College provost
the Rachel Carson College provost
the Stevenson College staff
Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies
the Latin American and Latino Studies department
the Film and Digital Media community
