Divorce rates double for married couples who start watching porn, U. of Oklahoma research finds

Sexual liberation also frees people from the bondage of their marital vows.

New research by a University of Oklahoma sociology professor finds that divorce rates go way up – and asymmetrically – when one or more married partners starts watching pornography, The Oklahoma Daily reports:

[Prof. Samuel] Perry surveyed the same subjects in multiple waves from 2006 to 2014. Perry’s study said the likelihood of divorce for subjects who began pornography use between survey waves nearly doubled. The likelihood of divorce for women who began pornography use between survey waves nearly tripled, the study says.

The study is the first to look at whether or not pornography use can predict divorce, Perry said.

Through the use of this longitudinal data, Perry said researchers “are able to say with more confidence that we think it’s actually pornography use that’s predicting marital dissolution.”

The Daily Mail provides more details from the survey:

[Researchers] found that porn negatively affects those in a happy marriage, the newly married or those from a non-religious home.

But there was no increase in the probability of divorce among weekly church-goers because the social stigma of divorce was greater, showing ‘religion has a protective effect on marriage, even in the face of pornography use’.

Already unhappy marriages are no more likely to end because of porn viewing. But women who stop viewing porn have a much bigger impact on the stability of their marriages – from 18 percent divorce risk down to 6 percent – than men who stop (no effect).

Perry says he’s not trying to get porn banned, but thinks people “should be aware of the potential consequences of pornography under certain circumstances.”
