University that upholds biblical sex beats challenge to its law-school accreditation

Even Canadian judges have limits when it comes to progressive attempts to punish religious belief.

Six provinces have now agreed to recognize graduates of Trinity Western University’s law school, according to the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). Its accreditation had been yanked by law societies across the country because the Christian school requires students to “abstain from sexual intimacy” outside of traditional marriage.

Graduates of unaccredited schools are functionally prohibited from working in their professions.

The latest is British Columbia: Its Supreme Court ruled the Law Society of British Columbia violated TWU’s “Charter rights” to freedom of religion:

I find that the Benchers improperly fettered their discretion and acted outside their authority in delegating to the LSBC’s members the question of whether TWU’s proposed faculty of law should be approved for the purposes of the admissions program.

Benjamin Bull, executive director of ADF International, said the ruling could represent “the beginning of the end of viewpoint based-discrimination against Christians and Christian institutions in Canada”:

No one – including Christians – can be banned from their profession because they hold biblically based views, and no Christian institution of higher education can be sanctioned because it reflects essential tenets of the Christian religion.

Other rulings are pending: TWU won in Nova Scotia but that has been appealed, while the school itself has appealed a contrary ruling in Ontario.
