You can now safely ‘disparage’ people at UNC without violating a speech code

The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill has eliminated all speech codes after working with the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education for the past year, the 21st such institution to earn the group’s “green light” rating, FIRE said today.

UNC quickly scrapped one “yellow light” policy – “concerning distribution of student flyers in residence halls” – after FIRE said it violated the First Amendment, and just eliminated its last speech code, which prohibits speech that “disparages” others.

FIRE staffer David Deerson, a UNC alum, started banging the drum against UNC’s policies as a student. “It is tremendously exciting to see my alma mater bring its policies in line with constitutional rights,” he said in FIRE’s release.
