The American Association of University Professors is considering legal action against the University of Illinois for revoking a job offer to anti-Israel academic Steven Salaita for his virulent tweets.
The Daily Illini reports that the association is “preparing its own report” about Salaita’s treatment following a UI faculty report that said his appointment should be considered again. The trustees rejected that recommendation:
Jordan Kurland, Associate General Secretary for the Department of Academic Freedom, Tenure, and Governance of the AAUP, said a draft of the report will be sent to concerned parties on Friday.
Concerned parties include University officials, such as [Chancellor Phyllis] Wise and board members, along with Salaita and his legal counsel. The concerned parties are asked to respond with corrections and comments by Feb. 2.
The AAUP will then finalize and publish its report on the Salaita case.
The group will decide after the report is finalized whether to take legal action against UI. Salaita can still take action on his own.
A co-author of the faculty report said “he and others hope to have some new policy ideas to present at the next Academic Senate meeting,” to preempt another Salaita-style brouhaha over “social media and ‘public utterances.'”
