Breaking Campus News. Launching Media Careers.
Introducing The College Fix’s Spring 2015 Journalism Fellow

We are pleased to introduce Derek Draplin as The College Fix’s spring 2015 journalism fellow. Draplin will work at The Detroit News, covering crime and courts.

As a student at the University of Michigan, Derek serves as editor-in-chief and publisher of the conservative campus news outlet The Michigan Review.

He is also a student reporter for The College Fix, and his work for The Fix has been featured on National Review Online, The Weekly Standard, Reason Magazine, The Daily Caller, The Globe and Mail, and Fox News, among other news outlets.

Draplin’s work for The College Fix has been strong and substantial. Among the highlights:

In August, he broke the news on how the former Michigan governor whose leadership oversaw a severe economic downturn, skyrocketing unemployment, Detroit’s emerging bankruptcy, and the meltdown of the automotive industry, is now a professor specializing in job growth at UC Berkeley.DDraplin

In September, he reported on how some colleges give students academic credit for pushing socialist causes on campus. His media queries to USC about the matter prompted campus officials to remove the offer from the political science department’s listserv.

Also in September, his report on how examples of “sexual violence” listed on the University of Michigan’s domestic violence awareness website include “withholding sex and affection” and “discounting the partner’s feelings regarding sex” took on a life of its own, and was heavily cited by several major news outlets.

In November, he compiled a list of more than 200 colleges and universities across the nation that – because of Obamacare – have cut student and faculty work hours to skirt the federal law’s mandate requiring employers to provide health insurance for people who work 30 hours or more per week.

And just a few weeks ago his report on a vicious hate crime at the University of Michigan ended up as the subject of feature story on Fox News’ On The Record with Greta Van Susteren.

Draplin will graduate from the University of Michigan in May 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

The College Fix is run by veteran journalists for the benefit of beginning journalists. We identify and support college students who seek to improve campus journalism, explore careers in the media, and commit themselves to the principles of a free society. The College Fix editors mentor the student reporters, as well as write news and commentary for The College Fix.

Since its launch in 2010, The College Fix has funded dozens of journalism internships for college students and recent graduates, and many former fellows are now reporters and editors at major news outlets in Washington D.C. and across the nation. Learn more.
