A controversial work of art at Wellesley College was vandalized this week. The statue, which depicts a middle-aged man sleepwalking in his underwear, stirred up controversy at the all-women’s college earlier this year.
“[T]his highly lifelike sculpture has, within just a few hours of its outdoor installation, become a source of apprehension, fear, and triggering thoughts regarding sexual assault for many members of our campus community,” said a petition calling for the statue’s removal, which was penned by student Lauren Walsh.
USA Today reports that the “Sleepwalker” statue was damaged when someone applied yellow paint on its face, left arm, left leg, and a foot.
Who knows if the culprit will ever be found? But if you want my guess–It was a paint-toting art student who happened to walk by without being given a proper trigger warning.
