A student at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls who is both male and female was voted Homecoming Queen. He/she chose to run to bring awareness to transgender issues.
Steven Sanchez, 21, a self-described “gender queer” biological male who often dresses and acts like a woman, was voted to the position by his peers in a decision announced at Friday’s football game.
Reuters reports: Sanchez said his gender identify was in transition, though he was unsure that he would ever physically become a woman.
“I identify as gender queer so not really one or the other,” he said.
