A lengthy article in Fordham University’s student newspaper details how the term “queer” and all it stands for has made substantial inroads in the New York-based Jesuit university as of late.
What started as a student task force in 2011 culminated last month with the university hosting its first “queer prom” (formerly called the LGTB prom). The Observer newspaper reports the term “queer” can also now be used in the titles of social events at Fordham as a result of student lobbying.
Events organized by the university’s Rainbow Alliance group that led up to that school dance included academic talks by professors on queer theory, and campus discussions titled “Queer 101” and “Q the Spotlight.” Students also pressured campus officials and posted fliers around the school.
The students seek additional changes as well, the newspaper reports. The Observer states “though the word ‘queer’ can now be used in the titles of social events at Fordham, it still cannot be used in club names, constitutions nor administrative programs and literature.”
