‘Our martyrs’: Chicago college students rally for ‘Gaza’

Pro-Palestinian activists are organizing walkouts and rallies in support of Israel’s attackers

Pro-Palestinian activists plan to host events throughout the week at Chicago universities, with at least two specifically meant to “honor” the “martyrs” of the war on Israel.

Students for Justice in Palestine will host a “vigil” on Oct. 9 at Loyola University Chicago to “honor our martyrs.”

Originally planned for today, the event had to be rescheduled due to “administrative repression,” the group wrote on Instagram.

“Calling all LUC students: Join the Muslim Law Student Association and Students for Justice in Palestine in honoring the Palestinians martyred throughout the past year on October 9, the one-year mark of the ongoing genocide,” the pro-Palestinian group at Loyola posted.

Students for a Democratic Society at DePaul University will host a rally on Thursday, according to an Instagram post.

But the DePaul Divest Coalition, along with Students for Justice in Palestine on campus, is also calling on students to support “martyrs” throughout its “week of action.”

“It’s been over a year of genocide, which is why we are calling all DePaul students to participate in a Student Walkout,” today, according to a join post on Instagram.

“Join as we honor all our martyrs,” the graphic stated.

SJP DePaul wrote in the accompanying post:

It has been one year since the [I]sraeli genocide on Gaza began. DePaul rhetoric has not changed. While we continue the fight for disclosure and divestment, DePaul keeps playing into the narrative that israel is portraying – the denial of the genocide. Join us on October 7, 2024, for a walkout to commemorate our martyrs, and to show DePaul that the more they try to silence us the louder we will be.

University officials previously called Chicago police to help clear a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus in May, as The College Fix reported. The university also released a report detailing anti-Jewish threats and vandalism at the encampment. The university also reported finding weapons, including knives and a pellet gun, at the pro-Palestinian tent city.

A walkout and rally are also planned for this afternoon at the University of Illinois Chicago. “Join us for a powerful day of rallying, learning, and community building,” the campus SJP wrote, describing its “For Gaza We Rise” event.
