One More Reason Not to Become a Lawyer

Lawyers are six times more likely to commit suicide than members of the general population.

That’s not something they tell you in the recruitment brochures. It’s an unfortunate fact that law school has become the default path for so many young people who simply don’t know what to do with their lives. I’m sure there are lots of factors that go into this suicide problem, but it’s no secret that many hate their jobs. And that can’t help.

Meanwhile our law schools continue to pump out a glut of J.D.’s each year, all of whom think they are in line for a lucrative, exciting career. For some, it works out. But a great many would be happier with another line of work.
