The law designed to provide health insurance for young people has actually left a swarm of New Jersey college students without it.
“Community colleges in New Jersey used to offer cheap health insurance for hundreds of dollars a year, but they had to drop the practice because federal law prohibits the sale of bare bones policies,” reports CBS News. “Under the Affordable Care Act it would have cost more to run the program and the cost would have been passed on to students.”
Many healthy students across the state say they just need cheap, catastrophic plans for emergencies, and are surprised and frustrated to learn that’s no longer an option under Obamacare, which forces young people to get super comprehensive plans, such as the ones historically purchased by parents with children.
CBS interviewed student Carlos Arias, who said he depended on the former low-cost health care plan.
“I’m kind of healthy right now but I am worried that when something happens I’m not going to go to the hospital,” Arias said.
