TCF Assistant Editor Robby Soave contributed his thoughts on the Obamacare ruling in The Michigan View’s All-Stars Symposium:
Libertarians and limited government conservatives have long known that government officials in both parties – and at all levels of government – are complicit in schemes to deprive Americans of their liberties. Now, any who still believed the Supreme Court justices were somehow different have been unburdened of this delusion.
The growth of government power runs in one direction, and the small number of people within the government who oppose its growth are standing in the path of a tidal wave. If we don’t want to live in a world where the federal government can command the American citizenry to purchase broccoli, two things must happen.
First, we should only elect radical, anti-government zealots. Does anyone believe that Mitt Romney, who first conceived the idea for the individual mandate as governor of Massachusetts, will substantively eliminate Obamacare? No more statists, please – be they of the right or left-leaning variety.
Second, and more importantly, those who care about limiting the role of government in civil society should engage their creative and intellectual energies toward making the case for freedom to their fellow citizens. Libertarianism is not just morally valid, it allows society to become happier, wealthier, and healthier. The limited government movement must convince more people of this before it stands any chance of thwarting the state on a fundamental level.
One day, the American people will tell President Obama and the Supreme Court that we will not eat our broccoli. Just not today.
