New York City mayor outlines how city schools will thwart ICE agents

In a press conference today, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio detailed how his city’s schools will not cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

According to Townhall.com, the mayor said President Trump’s more aggressive immigration policies “violate our values,” and noted school officials would be informed about procedures to follow if ICE agents should show up: ICE agents will be kept outside school buildings and school personnel will share nothing with them “unless required by law.”

“Parents don’t know what the [new immigration] policies will mean for their children,” the mayor said. “We think it’s crucial to fight for all New Yorkers and to help immigrant New Yorkers to know their rights.

“This is your city. Your city will stand by you.”

From the story:

If agents do obtain a warrant, they will be permitted to enter the school, but they will be closely monitored by school security.

“ICE agents will not be wandering the halls of a school,” the mayor promised.

In addition to blocking ICE from entering schools, De Blasio said programs like Make the Road NY will be held in schools in order to prepare parents as Trump’s immigration policies go into effect.

The city will also facilitate workshops for parents to get questions answered about their rights in general and how they can get help. They have planned over 100 Know Your Rights workshops in boroughs throughout the city which will inform families where they can seek legal assistance, and free immigration services if they are facing the threat of deportation.
